Earlier this year, Minnesota ACDA asked me to contribute to their year long focus on renewal. Here is a short article that was born out of that request.
Celebrate a little EVERY day…..
In a world where expectations seem to increase by the second, I am constantly looking for ways to recharge. I am often reminded of the adage “work smarter, not harder” as I search for efficiency. With a schedule that is rarely free of any appointments, daily renewal is a must. I sometimes say that “one must always make time to experience a little heaven.” I try to do that in as many of the following ways as possible on a daily basis, sometimes for just 10-15 minutes:
– Exercise (going to the gym, walking through the park, doing Tai-bo in my living room)
– Prayer (meditating, listening to music that leads me to worship, working at being completely present in every moment)
– Laughter
– Listening to great music (from J.S. Bach to Lizz Wright whether live or on Spotify)
– Eating an exquisite meal and enjoying a fine glass of wine
– Reading (the New Yorker, Alex Ross’ blog, fiction or self-help)
– Spending quality time with someone I love
Conductors are some of the hardest working individuals I know. We often juggle school, church, and community work, and often put ourselves at the very bottom of the list. Make time, friends, for a little heaven every day!
