Jed Scott (Rockford High School) – Jazz & Show Choir R&S Chairjed@jedscott.com JED SCOTT is an active freelance composer and arranger, with particular interests in vocal jazz, contemporary a cappella, and traditional choral music. A number of his arrangements are published by UNC Jazz Press, the leading independent jazz press. He received back-to-back Downbeat Awards for “Best Jazz Arrangement.” (2003,2004) His vocal music is performed throughout the United States by top vocal jazz and choral ensembles.Mr. Scott is an alumnus of the University of Miami with Master of Music Degree in Studio Jazz Writing. While there, he studied composition and arranging with Gary Lindsay and Larry Lapin. He received bachelor degrees in music and Latin from Western Michigan University where he studied with Steve Zegree and Diana Spradling and sang for three years with the internationally recognized vocal jazz group, Gold Company. Mr. Scott is also active as a recording engineer with a number of albums to his credit, including three acclaimed albums for Gold Company and a Grammy-nominated thirty-minute big band suite with jazz composer Maria Schneider as well as several nationally distributed works for Hal Leonard Press. He received a Downbeat award for “Outstanding Performance in Studio Engineering” (2002).As a conductor, Mr. Scott began working with the Rockford Aces, a 12 voice extracurricular men’s ensemble he founded at Rockford High School, in 2008. In the short time of their existence, they have already been recognized as examples of choral excellence, both in pop and classical styles. In 2010 they were invited to perform at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. The Aces have opened for the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and performed with the U-M Friars. Mr. Scott previously directed a similar ensemble, AcaFella, for five years in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He also is active as a guest director, working to help ensembles take their musicianship to the next level.Mr. Scott is a lifelong resident of Michigan, and currently lives in Rockford with his brilliant wife and three children, Owen, Julian, and Daniel. He is blessed to spend his days with them and his mornings and evenings working to create music.The mission and purpose of the Jazz/Show Chorus section is to provide a vehicle of communication from the board of directors to the membership. Repertoire and Standards committee chairs are required to contribute one article per year, due in September, as part of their responsibilities.
