Helen Hofmeister Hawley (Westminster Presbyterian Church) - Music & Worship R&S Chair

Helen Hofmeister Hawley currently serves as Minister of Music at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she directs the 80 voice Sanctuary Choir (adult), the Kirk Singers (high school), the Chapel Singers (middle school), and is the principal organist. She previously held similar church positions in Kansas City, Missouri and Lawrence, Kansas. Major works for choir and orchestra that she has conducted include the Mozart Vesperae Solennes, Mack Wilberg Requiem, Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms, Pinkham Christmas Cantata, Conrad Susa Carols and Lullabies of the Southwest, Rutter Gloria, Vivaldi Gloria, and Bach Magnificat. During her tenure as a church musician, Ms. Hawley has attended many week-long choral workshops at Westminster Choir College, and also denominational conferences, including those sponsored by the Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Episcopalian churches.
In December of this year, the Sanctuary Choir of Westminster Presbyterian Church will premiere an anthem by Stephen Paulus which they have commissioned in honor of the church’s 150th anniversary. Ms. Hawley holds both her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in organ performance from the University of Kansas. She has done post-graduate work at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany, as a recipient. She is also an internationally known carillonneur, and has performed carillon recitals in fifteen states as well as in Belgium and the Netherlands. Besides being a member of the ACDA, she is also an active member of the GCNA (Guild of Carillonneurs in North America) and the Grand Rapids AGO (American Guild of Organists). The mission and purpose of the Music & Worship section is to provide a vehicle of communication from the board of directors to the membership. Repertoire and Standards committee chairs are required to contribute one article per year, due in September, as part of their responsibilities.
